Hattember Competition – A Challenge To Remember!

Welcome to Hatters Millinery Supplies Hattember Competition for 2019! We were overwhelmed by the positive response to last year’s competition and we are so excited to bring you a new and exciting Hattember this year. As usual, the Hattember competition is a charitable effort, raising funds for the John Skipper Kelly Fund. The JSK Fund is a cause close to our hearts, which provides leadership opportunities, mentoring and support for young people from a range of backgrounds.

This year we will be offering two categories for you to enter:

 

Category 1: Racewear                          Category 2: Wearable Art

Entrants in each category will be sent a curated bag of materials (each category will receive different materials) in which to create their entry from. Each of the items in the bag must be used, if only in part, to complete your submission. Registration, which includes entry, your bag of materials and the postage of the materials, is $110.

You may enter up to two times per category.

Postage and return postage of your final submission is at the entrants cost. A return postage label MUST be included in the box with your submission. If you are an international entrant, you may contact us to organise your return postage.

Category 1: Racewear

For this year’s competition we are asking entrants to create a hat, headpiece or fascinator suitable for Racewear. We are looking for a Fashions On The Field ready piece that would look right at home at any of the world’s leading Race days.

In addition to the items provided, you may use up to 3 other elements to create your design.

The piece should be made to fit a head fit of 22.5 inches or 57cm.

Judges will determine the winner of the Racewear category by –

  1. Original Design
  2. Wearability
  3. Quality Workmanship
  4. Use of provided and additional materials

Category 2: Wearable Art

In this category, entrants can make almost anything using the millinery materials provided – as long as it comes under the branch of “wearable art”. This could include, but is not limited to, hats, headpieces, jewellery, fashion, and accessories. Surprise us with your innovation to create something “outside the box” with our beautiful selection of millinery supplies.

In addition to the items provided, you may use up to 3 other elements to create your design.

As this category is broader in nature, there is no size requirement. However, if you are making a hat, it should be made to fit a head fit of 22.5 inches or 57cm.

Judges will determine the winner of the wearable art competition by –

  1. Creative use of provided and additional materials
  2. Aesthetic Sensibility
  3. Quality Workmanship

Registration and Payment:

  1. Registrations open on the 1st of June for both categories and close on the 1st of July
  2. Registration cost is $110 – included in this price is your entry fee and a set bag of materials that will be used to create your submission
  3. Registration and payment should be made through the Hatters Millinery Supplies Website here or follow these instructions:
  • Head to the Hattember Competition page under “Online Store
  • Add which category you would like to enter to your cart
  • Enter contact and shipping information
  • Process payment – payment can be received via Credit Card, Paypal or Direct Deposit. Please note that for Direct Deposit, payment needs to be received into our account by the 2nd of July or your entry will be deemed invalid. Please note that it can take up to 48 hours for a bank deposit to show up in our account.
  1. Competition materials will be sent out collectively on July 10th in the attempt to keep a fair playing field

 

Submission and Exhibition:

When your entry is complete and ready to submit, please ensure that it is well packaged and protected before sending and includes the following:

  • Your entry
  • A submission form, which can be found here
  • A return postage label (please note that if you live outside of Australia, you may contact us to arrange a return postage label)

If you would like to deliver or collect your entry in person, please state that on your submission form.

Hats, accessories, and art pieces will be displayed in-store at Embellish Atelier for a week, commencing September 5th.

There will be an Opening night exhibition on the 5th of September at Embellish Atelier where all entrants are invited to come and enjoy a night of celebration of all the beautiful work that has been created.

 

Sale of goods:

As you know, the main drive behind our Hattember competition is to raise funds for the John Skipper Kelly Fund. As a part of the event, there will be an opportunity to sell your pieces. Commission on the sale of items will be 50%, with 20% off all profit donated to the JSK Fund sponsoring scholarships and opportunities for youth for social purpose.

If you wish to sell your piece, please indicate this on your submission form, along with a retail price.

 

Terms and Conditions:

  • Our Competition is open internationally to all milliners, artists, designers – wether you are an amateur, student or professional
  • Postage costs are incurred at the entrants own cost and return postage or pick up should be pre-arranged – entries that remain unclaimed after the 30th of September will be donated to the JSK Fund as auction items
  • Haberdashery items such as thread are not included as an element of design and will not count towards your extra 3 materials
  • All items included in the bag need not be used in their entirety, but should each be used in some form
  • Competitors may submit up to two pieces per category, but will be required to purchase a bag of materials for each entry (each entry will cost $110)
  • Entries should not contain a maker’s mark or label to keep judging fair
  • To keep the competition both fair and surprising for both entrants and judges, we require that no photos, videos, or illustrations be published of submissions until all submissions have been received on Friday 30th August
  • Judges’ decision is final

Prizes:

Our Prize pool includes generous donations from Embellish® Atelier, Hatters Millinery Supplies, The Hat Magazine, HaTalk E-Magazine, Ladies in Racing Magazine and more to be confirmed!

Starting this year, Winners will also have their name inscribed on a perpetual Hattember trophy that will be kept at Embellish® Atelier and Hatters Millinery Supplies. First, Second and Third Prize in each category will also receive a special Hattember rosette.

Announcements:

  • Finalists will be notified by email and then announced via Facebook and Instagram.
  • Winners will be announced at the opening night celebration on Thursday, 5th September
